CHAPTER 13

L eo wandered back into the library looking for Larry, then checked his texts. Larry had sent him a message.

Ran an errand. Meet you back at the station.

Hopefully, the errand had something to do with a breakthrough in the case. Perhaps the man had found something in his research about one of the women Jonathan might have been cheating with?

Leo headed out, relieved that he wouldn’t have to listen to Larry on the drive. Plus, it was just about lunchtime, so he might as well take his midday break.

He headed downtown, pulling up just outside Mona’s shop. Her car was parked outside, just as he had hoped. A little thrill ran through him. He’d ask her out to lunch—and also take a peek to see how the shop was coming along. Mona, he knew, was starting to get anxious, as the opening date was quickly approaching.

Leo went to the front door and peeked through the glass. She was busying herself with something near the front counter. He tapped on the door, and her head shot up. A grin appeared on her face, and she hurried over to let him in.

“Leo!” she exclaimed happily. “I’m so glad you came by!”

He looked around with a smile, soaking in his surroundings. The antique shelves had all been put up, and the paint colors she had chosen—mostly neutrals in shades of cream and brown—worked well with the rustic look she was going for.

“Whoa,” he said. “This place is really coming together!”

“The electrician just left, and everything’s in place. I can hardly believe it, but everything is finally, officially ready for me to start stocking shelves!”

“I’m so proud of you,” he said. “After a fire, I know a lot of people would have given up. You’re amazing.”

Mona blushed. “Thanks, Leo. Oh! Come check out this one display I’ve been working on!” She hurried over to the far side of the shop to show off an enormous bookshelf-like display case. Leo grinned as it came into view. There were cute, cartoonish, wooden honeybees all around the rim of the case.

“I’m guessing this is where Vicki will display her honey treats?” he asked.

“I haven’t shown her the cabinet yet. You think she’ll like it?”

“Are you kidding? She’s going to love it,” he said. “Did you make those little bees yourself?”

“That I did. Found an idea for it online.”

“Adorable.” He glanced back over his shoulder toward the back counter and noticed an enormous bouquet of flowers. “Whoa. What’s with the flowers?”

Mona grunted, heading toward the counter. The arrangement was huge. The vase itself was nearly as large as Leo’s torso, and the array of pink, white, and red roses seemed to almost gleam in the soft light.

“That would be Larry Simmons,” she said, picking up a small card that had evidently come with the roses. “They arrived just a few minutes ago.”

Leo took the card.

Congratulations on your success, beautiful! -Larry

Rage built up inside his chest.

Is this why Larry left the station early?

“When did he send these?” Leo asked.
